ABOUT US
We are a community hub for those living and working in the St Albans district. The hub is a focal point for promoting a more sustainable lifestyle, reducing our carbon footprint and increasing biodiversity.
The Green House is run by a group of St Albans residents. As the project grows, we are keen to make sure everyone in the community has an opportunity to guide how it develops, if they are interested in becoming more involved.
WHAT’S IN THE HUB?
The hub itself is a warm and safe space for meetings and conversations. There are displays relating to sustainability and a free eco library. We are the drop off point for hard to recycle items such as printer ink cartridges, dental care items and blister packs. We hold events that encourage and support behaviour change, from zero food waste and composting workshops to butterfly walks and climate related talks. We also have an eco book club,‘What Next? Wednesday’ advice sessions, a monthly sewing repair café, a junior Climate Club and a young adult birdwatching group.
We keep our website updated with our latest news. You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Insta. Or why not sign up for our newsletter?
WHERE IS THE HUB?
You can find us above Jefferson Eco at 46 London Road, AL1 1NG, just past the Co-op.
WHEN IS THE HUB OPEN?
During August we are open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5:30pm and 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Even if our volunteers aren’t there, you’re welcome to pop in and make use of the eco hub space.
If you would like to chat to one of our volunteers, please pop in between 11am and 3pm any day, Wednesday to Saturday.
HOW WE ARE FUNDED AND HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US
Our start-up funding came from donations and a small grant from St Albans District Council. We now have a PayPal funding account so that individuals who would like to support us can easily contribute.
We are a ‘Community Interest Company’ (CIC). This means we are a not-for-profit company. We are not affiliated with the St Albans City and District Council, but have good links with them.
We also work closely with Sustainable St Albans – the leading sustainability charity in the district:

We want to make it as easy as possible for people to live greener lives, so we are happy to work with any organisation that shares our goals. One role of The Green House is to signpost people to resources and organisations that can help them.
There are a variety of ways to support us financially, including donations via PayPal . Please sign up to our newsletter so we can keep you updated or drop us an email at info@thegreenhousestalbans.org.
Now that we’re open, we need volunteers to help with a range of roles and responsibilities such as looking after the eco-library and helping to run events such as the sewing repair cafe, checking items for our Library of Things and maintaining displays.
Please e-mail your details to us at volunteer@thegreenhousestalbans.org and we will get in touch.
